Meet our Traders: WELL PRESERVED (a.k.a. THE JAM LADY) |
I first started making jam as a hobby shortly after I retired as a teacher. I began selling at fetes and then joined Hailsham Street Market about six years ago, when it first began.

We have a 4.5 acre 'garden' in which there is a fruit orchard of 32 trees growing apples, pears, greengages, cherries and Victoria plums. We also have a soft fruit cage where we grow raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries, loganberries, redcurrants and blackberries. Our garden also hosts a large vegetable plot, a bluebell wood, large lawns, many flower beds and a paddock... I am kept quite busy! |
All my homemade jams are made from our organically grown fruit and they are all low sugar, with no added water. They are only made from fruit with sufficient sugar to preserve. I make the jams and marmalades in the morning, putting their colourful 'hats' on in the evening. I offer four sizes: 1lb, 0.5lb, 0.25lb and taster pots. |
I thoroughly enjoy researching new flavours and putting interesting twists on classic recipes, e.g. rhubarb and vanill, and peach and raspberry. However, the classics are always popular, such as strawberry, raspberry, blackcurrant and apple. |
I have now built up a regular clientele of customers who advertise me to their friends, for which I am very pleased. We open our garden twice a year for charity, so anyone can see where we grow our jam produce. |
